Air pollution facts and information
The most common phrase “Health is Wealth” is not only is a collection of words but an important lesson for a healthy life on earth. Many of the businesses, organizations, institutions provide good health facilities for their workers and employees around the globe because health facilities are considered basic needs for everyone living on this earth. There are other several health insurance agencies; different health care programs on national level in each country and World Health Organization (WHO) also provide universal health care services to improve the basic health facilities in each region of the world.
For a healthy life you need a healthy diet and clean environment. There are several things that make our environment good and clean, like clean air, shady trees in our surroundings, rivers with fresh water, less factories and industries etc. There are several factors in road to healthy life that we define, lets discuss it in brief.
Most of the people around us are taking a healthy diet to make their life better but the clean environment that we discussed above is an ideal situation in this globalized world. The greed of resources, power and wealth has worsen our global environment that it become impossible to transform it again in its natural form that why today in this planet we are facing global climate threats, and so many other issues.Industrialization and massive movement of heavy vehicles has worsened air quality. Marine pollution has make life difficult for marine species, plastic litter garbage in rivers pollute the flowing fresh water, landfills are increasing due to over consumption of resources, large scale deforestation for multi purposes are reasons behind animals extinction and rare plants. It also increases food insecurities and resources scarcity for the future generation.
So beside good diet healthy life depends on clean environment, fresh water and fresh air to breath. But most of the people live in today’s world with unhealthy air. Air pollution and global warming are interrelated and there are several factors of air pollution, it will be discussed later but here are some of the facts about air pollution that must be known to everyone.
20 facts of air pollution
Fact # 1
Inhalation of unhealthy air reduces on average 1-2 years of a health man’s life.
Fact # 2
Pollutants in air that make air pollution are the most harmful to human life comparatively to land pollution and water pollution.
Fact # 3
China is one of the big polluter of air pollution and there is unbeatable air pollution in china’s capital that bought a new respiratory disease called it Beijing’s cough.
Fact # 4
Almost 70 percent of the air pollution in china’s cities is due to transportation. China report more than 1 million deaths caused by air pollution in 2012.
Fact # 5
Air pollution rises becomes severe on large scale after industrial revolution. In 1952 approximately 8000 causalities are reported due to the great song in London. After that in 1970 the whole UK was consider as a Dirty Man of Europe.
Fact # 6
The common fact of air pollution is that when the wealth of any country (GDP) increases, can be strongly correlated with air pollution. It means that increase in economic growth has direct relation with increase in Pollution, specifically air pollution.
Fact # 7
It is a fact that air pollution kills 800 people per hour in contrast its 3 times high figure than the amount of deaths due to malaria, AIDS, tuberculosis every year.
Fact # 8
Indoor air pollution cause 3.8 million premature deaths annually, while majority of these death tolls recorded from developing countries with 60 % ratio of children and women.
Fact # 9
Approximately 29 % of the cities in high income countries do not meet the minimum criteria of safe air quality level issued by World Health Organization, while 97 % of the congested cities in low and middle income countries have worse air quality.
Fact # 10
There are 15 major countries that are considered high air polluters. According to the Paris agreement these countries spent 1 percent of the global GDP to maintain the global warming below 2 degree Celsius while the cost of air pollution is estimated more than 4 % of the global GDP.
Fact # 11
Some of the main factors of air pollution are indoor burning of fossil fuels, power generation plants, coal plants, diesel generators, huge industries, factories, vehicles movement, and agriculture activities that produce methane and ammonia.
Fact # 12
Diseases caused by air pollution are considered the fourth largest threat to human health in list of inactive diseases. High blood pressure is the third one while dietary risk is the second and smoking is on the top of the list that kills million per year.
Fact # 13
There are tiny dust particles named PM 2.5 and PM 10 in air that makes air worsen. PM 2.5 have diameter less than 2.5 micrometer and PM 10 have a diameter size of 10 micrometer. Both minute particles can go deep into the lungs and cardiovascular system that increase health risk.
Fact # 14
The alarming situation of air pollution is that it can travel from one country to another with low air pollution at atmosphere. Therefore fresh air at atmosphere is a collective good.
Fact # 15
The estimated premature death figure in china due to air pollution is 750,000 annually. Even air pollution in china caused by domestic factors can travel to Central Valley of California
Fact # 16
Asia region is also in list of high pollutants as 65 % of deaths in Asia are due to air pollution while in India its 25 % deaths.
Fact # 17
The estimated figure of deaths caused by air pollution is 6 million per year by 2050, if policies for industrialization and climate response remain same.
Fact # 18
People having residency nearer to heavy traffic roads, industrial zones, coal plants and oil energy consuming sectors have great risk of respiratory diseases, cancer, asthma, etc comparatively to the residency of rural areas because of the concentration level of the harmful pollutants in air. Virus like COVID-19 and some other diseases can easily kills an individual with poor air quality.
Fact # 19
From the first quarter of year 2020, the concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) drop 10 percent in atmosphere as a result of Global Lock Down due to the Global Pandemic (COVID-19).
Fact # 20
Air quality Index (AQI) is a tool to report air quality that ranges from 0 to 500 and has been categorized by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) into 6 categories. AQI measure the concentration of PM 2.5 and PM 10 in air. From 0 to 50 the AQI remains satisfactory, onwards the higher value of AQI recorded means the high level of air pollution in atmosphere.
We have discussed important information and some facts of the air pollution to aware people from knowledge regarding air pollution facts.
Next time you go outside, check AQI as a precaution and take safety measurements. Here are some of the safety measurements and air pollution prevention
- Cover your face with good quality of air pollution mask that can purify air for you.
- Wash your hands while entering to home from outside.
- Plant more trees in your garden to fresh air surrounding.
- Use bicycle for near ride instead of car, that can reduce air pollution and you can reduce your carbon footprint.
Call for action
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working on different mega projects to reduce the air pollution in different regions of the world. Paris Agreements on climate change 2015 restrict major emitting countries to reduce Green House Gases emission in effort to sustain global temperature below 2 degree Celsius. There is a dare need of more actions like penalties on major polluters on global level.
National policies for industries and factories and other air polluters should be regularly monitor and legislation such as environmental protection act should be strictly followed in each country. Off course small actions like installing scrubbers at top of the factories’ chimney can control a lot of air pollution and should focus on afforestation to reduce air pollution and climate threats.
On individual level we have option to plant trees, use bicycle for short rides. We can public bus as a medium of transport. A single bus can carry passengers of 40 cars on road that can reduce air pollution and other traffic problems. We can also use eco-friendly car like electric cars. Indoor air pollution can be control by using other means of energy fuel rather than fossil fuels.
There are several steps to reduce air pollution; to be sure each small step to control air pollution can bring a lot of positive changes in environment. Above we discuss important facts of air pollution and few actions on individual level as well as national level that can improve air quality. Reading this blog is our aim and to follow discuss action on individual is our motive. What’s your thought about air pollution and what we can do for a better environment? Let us know.
